The second biggest contribution would come from the industrial sector, expected to reach $1 billion, while the rest would come from the fisheries ($400 million), tourism ($356 million) and forestry ($40 million).
This was yesterday revealed by Pengiran Kamarudzaman Pengiran Hj Md Ishak, a senior special duties officer at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, during a Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources presentation delivered at a forum on the study of Land Optimisation Strategy for Industrial and Commercial Growth in Brunei Darussalam, organised by the Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies (CSPS) with SGS Economics and Planning Australia.
He also showed last year's gross output figures: In 2010, Brunei secured $1.515 billion, whereby the agriculture sector contributed $228 million, industrial sector contributed $980 million, tourism reached $188 million, while fisheries brought in $87 million and forestry standing at $31 million.
The senior special duties officer added, "We hope that by 2035 we will be able to achieve $4.496 billion in gross output, and most contributions would come from agriculture. This will be our main focus."
To achieve last year's gross output, the government allocated hectares of land to serve as agriculture areas.
As of 2010, the breakdown of land allocated for agriculture in all four districts stood at 2,613 hectares of land in Brunei-Muara District (1,480 for livestock and 1,158 for crops); 3,460 hectares in Tutong District (1,826 for livestock and 1,634 for crops); Belait District with 1,210 hectares (128 for livestock and 1,082 for crops) and Temburong District with 832 hectares (182 for livestock and 650 for crops).
In total, nationwide, 55 per cent of the total land allocated for agriculture is used for crop production.
Touching on other projects and land use under the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, he said, "There are shrimp culture and land-based aquaculture sites in Telisai, Tutong. Under the forestry sites, the Heart of Borneo takes up 70 per cent of forest coverage in Brunei to be protected under the conservation initiative. This also includes the Ulu Ulu Forest as well as forest recreational park"
There are nine industrial sites under BINA - Beribi, Lambak Kanan, Salar, Serasa, Kuala Lurah, Serambangun, Sungai Bera, Pekan Belait and Batu Apoi. The industrial sites occupy 422 hectares of land.
Touching on one of the biggest projects, the Agrotech Park, he said, "The location of the park is in Tungku, Gadong, and covers an area of 500 hectares, whereby 50 hectares are to be developed in Phase I."
The objectives of the Brunei AgroTech Park, he said, "Are to develop an internationally renowned agro-technology park as part of the economic diversification strategy; accommodate research and innovative technology; and to develop high technology agriculture, fisheries, forestry and other related activities to support the 'Brunei Halal Brand.'
The development concept of the AgroTech Park, he highlighted, "Are botanic gardens to create a beautiful environment showcasing Brunei's unique flora and fauna; and a health and therapeutic spa. There will also be a specialised centre for education and training.
